Hi all. We have some crazy neighbors who shoot on their property.
<sigh> Not everyone who "shoots" is crazy. Anyone who thinks so has
an agenda.
I'm
not sure what guns they have; I don't know much about guns. I do know
that sometimes when they shoot, there is no gap between bangs, and they
will go bang maybe 6 times in a row, pretty darn loud. Other times
it's one bang and then a pause and then a bang bang and a pause and
then a bang... If that makes any sense. They are around 1300' feet
from me when they shoot. Their property line is 1000' or so from the
back of my barn, and 500 or so feet from the nearest horse, and zero
feet from the potentially nearest cow.
So what? If they are exercising proper safety techniques these are
non-issues.
I'm fortunate to have an entire mountain for a "back stop." My son
and I were out "burning powder" on Sunday. My neighbors cows were
under 100 yards away, but in the opposite direction.
Anyway, I'm wondering what the longest range of a gun that a typical
person might have - although I guess they aren't typical people since
they used to be cops, which is part of why they never get in trouble
for their shooting. Anybody have an idea?
Some rounds have very long "carry" distances. Long gun rounds will
go farther than handgun rounds, as a rule. A .22LR out of a long gun
can carry for a mile (but has little "energy" left at the end). Billy
Dixon at Adobe Walls in Texas shot a Commanche war chief off his horse
at 1538 yards using a Sharps single shot rifle in .50-90 (probably).
This was a black powder weapon. A modern .50BMG can carry for 2000+
meters and be accurate (a Canadian sniper presently holds with world
record for a shot in Afghanistan at 2430 meters).
Why do you assume that because your neighbors used to be "cops" that
they don't have to follow the rules? Once again, your agenda is
showing.
If you have a complaint, make it to the authorities. If your
neighbors are in violation then it will be handled. If they are but
it's not then you can take additional steps. If they are not in
violation of any rules then you will just have to "suck it up" and
recognize that the world does not revolve around you.
