Yes but by black based I mean not bay based. I realize bays are black
based.
And unless he is a very black bay, it seems like it would hard to confuse a
blue roan with a bay roan.
I see a bay roan draft cross competing at the shows around here. Striking
looking animal. No chance confusing that with a blue roan.

I used to not like the roan color that much but the BO has a beautiful
black roan. What I like is that he is so dark on his head and legs. She
also has a strawberry roan (is that right?). They are related and are
similar in pattern (except that one has the black and one has the
chestnut) and when they are turned out together will groom each other.
I drove up seeing them in one of the turnouts doing this and it was a
beautiful sight. The BO says they are best friends.
