No, not feeding alfalfa. I do feed it to another horse, so I have it
in the barn, but she isn't getting it.
I took her to the vet again today--- fourth time this week-- can't wait
to see what the bills are going to total.... We looked at her with a
full mouth speculum and lights, and under sedation after the swelling
went down from last night's meds. She's still not out of the woods.
There were some small red spots on the inside of her gums on the right
side-- top and bottom and one sort of infected spot at the bottom.
Looking deep into her mouth, the color of the mouth wasn't really
right. It was sort of gray toward the back, and her tongue was not pink
on the top, but it was on the bottom. There was an open abrasion on the
left side where the tongue had been pressed up against the teeth. I
think it was just the result of the tongue swelling so much. The teeth
do need a float, but we didn't do that now--- will wait until this has
subsided.
It looks like it was some type of poisonous plant, or possibly fire
ants. It is possible it was a thistle, and it is also possible she may
have eaten the bad plant on Sunday when we went on a trailride. She
came back and had a mild colic that night, but her mouth wasn't
swollen, so I hadn't thought it related until today. It was Tuesday I
first noticed the swelling, and then again on Thursday. It never
completely went away and came back on the same side in the same place,
which means it probably wasn't an insect bite because the swelling
wouldn't have lasted so long. .
I have moved her to a smaller paddock and will keep her out of the
pasture for now. I will wait awhile before she is ridden since her
mouth is so torn up, and get her floated when she recovers. Still no
definitive answer, though.
