It's a numbers game. If a horse uses 18 to 20 pounds of hay per day,
(sometimes given as 2 lb per 100 lb bodyweight)
and if a small hay bale weighs 50 to 90 lb
and if a big round bale weighs 800 to 1000 lb
....then
6 horses times 18 lb per day = 108 lb used per day
How many days to exhaust a 1000 lb bale?
1000/108 = 9 days
But if you are supplementing with grazing, grain, sweet feed,
whatever, that means less hay is needed.
