Hmm. That is what it sounds like I am pretty sure. It happens on
every breath, as he's breathing out it makes a loud breathy "haaaa"
sort of sound. I can almost do it if I force myself to make noise when
breathing out - not really a voiced noise, more of a loud breathy
noise. And yeah, it's not coming from his nose - I would have said
throat but maybe it is the chest. The trainer who rode him didn't
comment on it but he's not a super fancy knowledgeable trainer. He's
more a local cowboy who's been starting colts all his life who might
not know about roarers. I'm going to ask him after a couple rides if
he thinks it's weird, if he doesn't bring it up himself.

It comes in degrees of severity and can be harmless, I read, in most
cases, unless you want your horse to race. It doesn't seem to bother
him or impede him - he has plenty of energy, LOL.

I bought a horse at a dealer once, brought him home, turned him out and when he rolled and got up he sort of grunted, then we he ran around you could clearly hear the noise. It comes from the windpipe, they can do tie back surgery to prevent it, it has something to do with vocal cords. I took the horse back to the dealer. I did have a horse in my barn who had had the surgery, he couldn't whinny. It's not just racing where the horse can have trouble, any kind of strenuous work will be a problem, as they can't get enough air.
