Re: kicked in the foot

We were riding down some trails into a park that is lakefront land, but
the water is now so low, it is more like a lot of open pasture.
Someone had left a white two-sided plywood sign down there, and we rode
up on it and stopped to decide where to go next. For some reason, Aspen
spooked at the sign ( I guess it didn't seem to belong there), and
began to back up. One of the young horses was standing close and cow
kicked at her, as I guess she'd moved too close for comfort. She missed
Aspen, but got my left foot. I don't know if it's broken (don't want to
spend $400 at the emergency room), if not necessary, but it hurts. She
hit the side of the foot-- outside edge- so I'm hobbling around now.
It's swelling a little, but isn't that bruised. I've got ice on it. It
hurts when I stand up, but it's o.k. when it is bearing no weight. Any
thoughts on this? Anyone had a foot injury like that? I guess it's par
for the course with horses. I'm going to see how it goes before I make
a trip to the doctor. It may just be bruised.

I had a March fracture once, in that area. Named for the tendency for
soldiers on the march to get fractures of the bone at the outside edge
of the foot. In that case, it was just a question of waiting the
injury out, while applying minimal stress to the foot. I think I used
crutches. I suppose that if the injury were similar, a wait and see
approach would be reasonable. But the damage might be more severe.
Perhaps a daily evaluation of the foot for two or three days, and
making the trip for an Xray if deterioration were noted, might work.

I actually hate it, that people have to worry about costs just when
they have an injury on their plate. Are you far from Mexico or
Canada?
