I was going to say what I really think about flashes but then saw that
Mary said it for me. There is no reason at all to tie a mouth shut. And
sorry, no matter what people say about them or how they justify them,
they are not necessary. I think they are really an abomination. They
are indeed often used by the yankers. Gawd almighty.
In all my years of riding and hanging out in barns..hunter/jumper
barns, dressage barns, eventing barns, I have never come across a horse
that didnt do something weird with its mouth *for a reason*. Either its
teeth were bad, the bit wasnt right, the back hurt, the hocks hurt, the
saddle didnt fit..SOMETHING was up, and it showed in the horses
mouth.Sometimes it was hard to figure out..but it was always something.
Lots of times it was something that wasnt obvious..the vets didnt find
the bad saddle fit, or what have you.
As a rider and trainer I want to know everything that is up with my
horses. If they are sticking their tongues out, or opening their
mouths, or whatever, there is a REASON, and its up to me to figure out
what it is, no matter how obscure. It could also be the rider..as in
hands, position, balance, etc. But regardless, we owe it to them to
figure out what is going on, and fix the problem, not just cover it up.
I cant stand seeing these poor horses at dressage shows, their mouths
cranked shut for NO reason. Man.
