Well, I took the plunge today, for myself. I bought my daughter a horse a couple of months ago and tonight, as it turns out, bought one for me.
Congratulations.
His price was cheap enough that I bought him unvetted ...
PPEs are comforting if you're spending more than you can afford to throw in the toilet (which is a mistake, IMHO); but they are no guarantee. Good luck.
One negative: I did notice he doesn't like to open his mouth except for the bit. Didn't want me to check his teeth till I put some molasses on my fingers and then I could see inside, or when he was taking the bit.
He's been through a lot. Give it a rest for a couple of weeks, then work on putting an empty wormer tube or wooden dowel rod in his mouth.
I'm calling my barn tomorrow where he'll be boarded. I assume there is some kind of quarantine period I can expect, while he gets what he needs from the vet, for the protection of the other horses? What would the normal time frame be?
Two weeks for rhinoviruses and strangles to manifest themselves.
In my limited experience, if the horse has an interstate health certificate and doesn't immediately drop dead, more like two days.
