Re: Dust Control for Indoor Arena - any inexpensive products out there???

We've struggled for a few years with this problem. Last year we went
the soya oil 'Lecethin' route we had the sales rep out and were very
high on the whole deal. It cost about $600 and lasted maybe 2 months
tops. We weren't sure if it was the product or all the water we put
down with it. We use our arena for our foals in the early spring so we
are reluctant to put any salts down. They will form a base with water
and burn skin if the foals lay in it plus dry out their hooves. We
have some people in our area who sell the water that comes off the tops
of gas wells. A few years ago the ministry of environment past laws to
stop them from just dumping the water out beside the wells and forced
them to contain it and dispose of it. No one really knows whats in the
liquid but several people just swear how cheap and wonderful it is. I
wonder how they will feel when their horses start getting cancers and
other medical problems.
That's the problem I have with many of the products people are pushing
for control. They are very vauge on what the product is, either
because it is a cheap simple product that they are making a killing on
or because it really isn't safe. I work in the emergency services and
am a Hazardous Material Technician. The one thing you can always
depend on when we respond anywhere is that we will not be given all the
information right off the bat and the size will always be
underestimated by at least 3. It seems the same when trying to find a
product to keep the dust down.
We'd love to hear if you do find a solution, we are looking at mineral
oil, it is non toxic, we do know a person who uses it and says how
great it works. The question for us now is if we apply it directly or
soak fine sawdust and place it on top of the sand.
