| I think the importance here is "not necessarily"; it can have carry
| over, might or might not in practice. And if the rider lacks body
| awareness and saddle time, perhaps s/he can require good manners on
| the ground but translate *nothing* to the horse under saddle. I used
| to work with someone who was excellent on the ground, all horses were
| mannerly with her. She couldn't ride worth beans. No translation at
| all.
I agree that's probably very close to what Jahiel meant.
And I think Emily has a good point about the lack of upper level horses at
an affordable price. But looking at the riders at the shows, that is quite
obviously NOT the whole reason. I think people underestimate who long it
takes to really nail the basics. Then they get bored and start insisting on
doing third level stuff with appalling consequences.
