Grain for horse with allergies

Hi all,
I started my gelding on some grain, and the next day he had little
bumps all over him. The 2nd day they were worse. They don't seem to
bother him, and they seem like "protein bumps." (Vet is aware of them,
but only through verbal consultation and has not seen them himself).
Now I'm taking him off the grain and see if they go away. Assuming
they do, we're concluding he has an allergy to the protein source.
The problem is, he needs weight put on. He lost it while in training
(pacing in a stall all day after his whole life on pasture).
So my question is, can anyone recommend a grain for horses prone to
protein allergies? I don't remember if the bag said what the source of
the protein is (is it required to? I'll look later).
I know things like dog and cat foods have special types for animals
that are prone to allergies. Does the same exist for horses? Are
there certain types of protein sources that are better for horses prone
to allergies, and is it easy to find feed with those sources?
Thanks!
.
