I'm sorry to hear that Denise. The doctor who did my DH's surgery was wonderful. My SIL who is a nurse at the hospital where my DH had the surgery was with him when the drain was removed. She said it was about 14" long but that the doctor removed it very gently. It doesn't really hurt but my DH said it felt like they were pulling a string attached to his toes. Lots of pressure more than pain. The time was in seconds but felt much longer.
I hope all goes well with your hubby.

The threat that WILL work is that they may have to put another drain in.
He almost passed out when they removed it yesterday!
----------------------------------------------------- My husband had surgery for cancer in April and woke up with a drain.
Two days later the doctor came in to remove it. When he yanked it out,
it broke off in DH's stomach. They had to do another surgery to remove
the d*** thing. He had to stop eating again, then the surgery, and it
added two extra days in the hospital. What a PITA. The doctor had
never had that happen before and blamed the tube manufacturer. Then to
add insult to injury, thay tried to charge us extra for the extra
surgery over and above the amount the insurance paid. I'm still fighting
them on it and the insurance company confirms that I don't owe another
penny.
I'm glad they were able to get the appendix out in time. Unfortunately
in our case, the surgery didn't totally remove all of the cancer, nor
did 7 weeks of daily radiation, which he finished during the holidays.
Now it's a waiting game. Getting old sucks, but heck, he's only 60.
