Okay, wait ... are you saying that you go out to the grocery store and when
leaving the car, just leave it in your car (instead of taking it in with
you?). If so, remember that for whatever reason (however over-imaginative) a
police officer can ask to see your ID. Just because it's your *driver's*
license doesn't mean that it's the only function it has. It proves that you
are Karen "XXX" and proves that you live here, are a citizen (with a phone
call to verify), free of warrants, etc.
If for whatever reason (again, letting my imagination run wild -- cause
that's what it prefers and who am I to say no??) you need to prove you are
who you say you are, a police officer is not required to let you dash off to
the car to get your license. In fact, he can haul your patootie in to the
local station and let you use your one phone call to ask your hubby to get
the license for you! Mainly because (no offense) the average person keeps
their ID on them at all times.
Now, I tend to be more than on the paranoid side. I *always* make sure I
have my ID whenever I go more than two steps out my front door. Why? Because
the day I forget my license will be the ONE day that there is an armed bank
robber, who's ruthlessly murdered a policeman, and who strangely enough
looks like ME but with another name (told you my imagination runs wild). And
my license will be the ONLY thing that keeps my patootie out of jail (which,
in this scenario, will be sitting on the kitchen counter for whatever
reason).
I keep mine in my cellphone holster. It's nice -- it clips to my
pocket/waistband, and has oodles of pockets for credit cards, license,
medical insurance card, etc. I NEVER leave home without my cellphone (last
time I did, my clutch cable snapped on a deserted country road at 9 PM at
night with my two babies -- we sat there, huddled in the floorboards for TWO
hours!!!) because that will be when either my car decides that's the day to
break down or that I'll see a UFO and not have a cellphone camera to use to
take grainy pictures of it. Or I'll see Elvis. ;)
But best of all, that little holster is easy to see, takes one hande to
reassure myself that it's there and has EVERYTHING. Just one hand! How much
better could that be??
I freely admit to being a nutcase ... sooooo as usual, YMMV!! :)
Oh, and congrats on the bike and thinking about getting your license!!
Woot!! Woot!! I used to have a Suzuki 550 and LOVED it!! :)
Hugs!!

One of my spring-time ponderings I am day-dreaming about is that this yearI
might be healthy enough to get my motorcycle license for my bike we takeWalMart,
camping. I've been keeping the permit locked up in the compartment under
the seat, and plan to keep my license there when I get it. I'm wondering
about my car driver's license. Never once in all these (not saying how
many) years of driving a car has anyone ever asked me to show my license
within my own home. I've shown it at the bank, the grocery store,
and - erm - even to an officer once or twice. Now tell me all the goodin
reasons for NOT keeping my driver's license locked up the car instead of
the house all the time.
