Schools here in Minnesota generally don't close for cold weather. The usual weather-related reason for closing the schools is a really bad snow storm that makes the roads unsafe. The only time I remember them being closed for cold weather was the last week in January, 1996. My parents had moved into an apartment; their house had been on the market for some time with no takers, but we still had stuff there,. We figured that we didn't have to be in a rush to clear it out, because generally home sales take a month or so once you get an offer. Well, they got an offer and we had to have everything out in a week. Of course, it was the coldest week of the winter. That was also the week the governor closed all the schools in the state for a day or two because of the extreme cold (overnight temps in the -30 degree F range, staying subzero during the day and probably some wind chill, too). The good thing about the schools closing was that a niece and a couple nephews were able to help us haul stuff out.

Panama City Beach, FL - the Panhandle!.
It's about 52 here now, and is *supposed* to get up to about 60 today ... we
don't hit the ugly, cold, cold, weather until around February - where it
*will* get to about highs of 30-40. Sometimes even lower. When it hits
around 20 F, the schools either close or have a "liberal-leave" policy for
students and teachers - you can take the day "off" but it counts as leave or
an excused absence (with a note).
I wonder if that's how it is everywhere in FL??
How about the rest of you guys? How cold does it have to be before the
schools say it's okay to stay home???
