Gosh, Jeanne, it is so kind of you to go to this much trouble for me (and others I hope).
I will print out your reply and study it. Even if I don't change anything I do, it is really good to know a bit more about what I use so much!
In 'the good old days', I went on a short ICL systems course - I was the only woman >g<. I just haven't kept up with the technology.
Thank you very much for this information. I will have a look at those hidden places! I do appreciate your time and trouble.

hi Patti,
i'll assume you have a PC rather than an Apple Mac (dont shoot me mac users).
i'll also assume your 'operating system' is called Windows, could be XP or Vista
or an earlier version.
when you go online, your browser is the program you use to go to websites.
with windows the program/browser is called Internet Explorer...many versions of
this too.
they keep upgrading the program to hopefully improve it, tho not always, lol.
the latest upgrade/version is 7. IE is short for Internet Explorer so IE7 is the
newest.
if you click at the top of your browser where it says 'help', then on that drop
down menu you'll see at the bottom 'about internet explorer', click that.
this will open a 'dialog window' that will tell you what version of IE you have
on your computer.
with IE7, you can make it so when you open any website will load into the
window.
i use a few, as you can with IE7. each one will show up as a 'tab' of its own.
a bit like the tabs in real life on the edge of things like dictionarys.
it sounds to me like you've got your 'home page' set for 'blank'.
this can be changed at anytime easily.
just get to the website you want to use as your 'home page' first.
once there, click the top of the window on 'tools' then on the drop down menu
click on 'internet options'.
once there the first tab 'general' has homepage, browsing history, search, tabs
and appearance.
you can change any of these as it shows. for homepage, click on 'use current'.
you can make other changes there too but for any changes you make, when
finished, always click on the bottom 'apply' button, then 'ok' button and the
window will save/apply the changes and close that 'dialog' window.
this will add the website/page you have gone to in IE as your homepage.
it will also make any other changes you did while there.
IE will now always open to that website/page.
i use quilterscache and a few others.
you can use more than one homepage (each will open in a new tab in the one
window).
just copy/paste any website addresses that you want as a different tab homepage
into the tools/internet options place (dont forget to click on 'apply' and
'ok').
i emailed you privately but thot i'd add this here as well.
holler if you need more help.
i'm always happy to help with puter stuff when i can.
keep'n busy in the south pacific,
jeanne
<lordy i hope that makes good sense, not sure how much you know about your
computer and how it works so i tried to go into a lot of detail as might be
required>

I just had a look (though I did think I could remember!)
I have a mostly blank screen, with my list of special favourites down the left
hand side; and a highlighted place where I can type the address of where I
want to go.
I don't know what a browser is; and I don't know what tabs are (well, in this
context I don't). I know I'm a lost cause, don't worry!

When you connect to the internet, what page do you see? You gotta start
from somewhere.
