How do you sew a straight seam?

I'm now working on my sixth quilt project and am still having a
problem sewing a good straight 1/4" seam. Most of my seams are
accurate enough to allow pieces to properly fit but a lot of my seams
(especially long ones) look like a series of minor corrections.

My only lessons and training has come from books and suggestions from
members of this group. So here goes another request even if it is a
little embarrassing to ask.

How do you sew a straight seam especially long ones?
