Re: OT - Niagara Falls

the cost of parking near the falls is insane, if you can find one.
i loved the stop we made in St Catherines(my grandma was born there),
tho you cant see the falls from there.
tis a lovely little village to wander up and down the streets and window
shop.
the falls are amazing for sure.
glad i was lucky enough to get taken there for a day trip while in london
last year.
have fun!!

In Niagara Falls, Canada at least, I'm afraid you might find that
amenities and view and near fun stuff don't much correlate with "price
is reasonable".

Better half and I visited for a mid-week winter getaway in January, and
even then our 2-night package was $379. It included 2 buffet
breakfasts for two and $75 off one dinner at the Hilton Watermark,
which is the only way the room price was reasonable, but the SUMMER
price for the same package is around $900!!!

Definitely don't room at or near the casinos if budget is a concern. I
would guess, but only guess, you might do better on the Canadian side
because your dollar is still worth a bit more (though not so much more
as it used to be). On the other hand, I understand NF NY is not quite
as "touristy" so maybe budget accomodation is easier to come by.

There was a Travelodge or something similar right on Clifton hill that
had a signboard up for $59 rooms, but again, that was last January.
Their web site now has a "special web rate" of $139.99. At a two-level
motel.

Probably a good thing to do is jump on Expedia.ca and just have them
search for hotels at your budget level. You might also be able to find
a small hotel or B&B that's technically "out of town" but not too long
a drive away - Ontario Wine Country is all around there. Towns like
Queenston, Welland, Vineland, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Thorold, Fort Erie
and St.Catherines might be much more economical but you could drive to
the Falls in about half an hour. And it's a very pretty drive from
those areas.

Have fun! Definitely check out the Journey Behind the Falls if you
never have, or take a Maid of the Mist ride. The Butterfly
Conservatory is nice. If you want some less crowded stuff head south
along the Parkway to the area known as Dufferin Islands - it'll still
be busy but its open park area. If you love the kitsch of "tourist
traps" there's Clifton Hill and of course the Table Rock area right
around the brink of the Falls.

Happy travels -

Johanna

ANy hotel suggestions American or Canadian side of Niagara Falls where
