When you first mentioned this, Sandy, I thought of what I would do, and was going to suggest it, but I decided you would have already though of it!! Just in case you haven't, and in case it might suit Susan, too:
I would just quilt straight lines between the lines of text - it would appear as if it were written on lined paper! but I suppose that wouldn't matter? This quilting would then be different from the rest of the quilt, but I usually do several kinds of quilting on a quilt these days.

I am working on a project with large areas of text. One is about 20" x
24". There are smaller pieces too and a couple of decorative quilt
blocks. All are appliquéd to a whole-cloth background. I don't want to
have much quilting going through my text areas, although I have
considered using a monofilament thread. So here is my idea:
Quilt the background using whatever designs. Then use knots to anchor
the text.
What do you think?
I'm having a very similar problem, Susan/Betsy. I purchased a panel of
doggie sayings and cut it up to put into a quilt top. Now that I'm ready
to quilt it, I find myself procrastinating because I really don't want
to use invisible thread -- but anything else will hide the writing on
the blocks. :S Wish I could help!
