We moved closer to work and school 3 years ago. Part of that was the
gas cost but mostly it was safety and ease of mind. (and I wanted to be in a house that would increase with the market) 3 out of 4 of us were driving 35 miles each way everyday. We went from that to 5 miles each way for dh, around 1 for dd and ds moved but he is 4 blocks from work now. If everyone could do what we did to change our needs this country would be in better shape but it would be hard for most.
DH and a sis did the Santa Ana river bike trail to the beach yesterday.
I dropped them off and collected them . After over 30 miles they both
said they would pay anything for gas ; ) I helped defray the gas cost
by hitting M&L AND Jenny's. I am in fabric hog heaven.
Hope the right job for you is just around the corner. You just have to
find it. Got my fingers crossed that it will be quick.

Taria,
The good thing about being unemployed is that I don't commute all over the place these days. I just filled up yesterday for the first time in 2 weeks. I like the idea of only going every 2 weeks vs. weekly to the Costco gas station. Wish I had a job to pay for the tank of gas yesterday though!
