A have a heavy heart today friends. Our oldest QI, Soccerball, a black &
white cobby cat, is off to the big quilt frame later today. She is now 17
and in kidney failure, so the vet said that it's time to let her go. The
kids left for school, DH, quite upset, left for work, so the rest is up to
me. I so dislike this part of QI partnership!
She has been a wonderful companion. She introduced herself to me at the
pet store as a tiny kitten. Sealed inside the glass display case, with her
very rough & tumble brother (who picked on her merciliessly!), she just
stood at the vent and purred at me like a 57 Chevy! All I did was talk to
her through the glass and she just oozed love! You could hear her across
the room. Such a loud sound from such a tiny body! Of course, she had to
come home with me. She lived her first year, very gently I might add, with
a house rabbit, and I think she actually thought she was one herself! She
would stand against the wall and look back over her shoulder as if she had
long ears herself. She refused to jump up onto counters or other surfaces
either, I suppose because the rabbit didn't. Eventually, much to her
dismay, more cats were added to the family. She tolerated them, but just
barely. She was a Human's Cat, not part of a feline community. She always
slept on our bed and during the winter when it was cold, she frequently
slept under the covers with us, right next to her people. On top of the
covers, or inside, she just HAD to have a paw touching your skin
somewhere, anywhere, or she couldn't get comfortable. When DH & I married,
she actually slept between us, with a paw on each! She became so used to
sleeping with us that, if we fell asleep without her, she would come up
and paw at the covers until we raised the blankets so she could crawl
inside and curl up next to us, with her little nose poking out. The one
English word she could understand was "Treats"! That would bring her out
of hiding from anyway, followed by a loud, plaintive "MEOW" that, I guess
meant "give me some NOW!". She has survived many life changes over the
years, including many moves, marriage, small children, and adding a dog
(oh how could we!). She never failed to offer up loud purrs and lots of
kisses for the slightest hint of a stroke on the back, or a rub across the
eyes. She has been a sweet and lovely soul and it is with great sadness
that I am reluctantly letting her move on.
So, if any of you run across a highly affectionate QI, in the weeks or
months to come, one who calls to you from that cage, or curb, or pen, it
might just be Soccerball, coming down for another round of human contact.
Please welcome her in, she will make your life better, just having known
her.
