Re: OT My long Spring day

When ds was around 5 and starting to have allergy problems she asked
about plants and flowers near the house. I had and bragged about
the big beautiful marigolds among all the rest. Man she went nuts.
Marigolds are nothing more than ragweed. I don't know about that but
I got rid of them I am spartan about using them since ; )

I love the earliest part of spring the very best. No allergies yet, everything shows such promise. No mosquitoes. I bought pansies today. They will add some color until the perennials come up. No point in planting anything else this early. That's a good way to get your heart broke.

Even better, no swarms of gnats. My own allergies kick into motion at
the first blooming of forsythia and the first mowing of the lawns in
the area, so even early spring is tough for me. That is why I was so
surprised to get the front mowed without antihistamines. When I mow,
I have to keep the cut grass downwind of me or I just get too choked
up to continue no matter how much benedryl I take before starting out.

My yard is so big I have recently realized that I need to plant mostly
big things to make the time and cost of the plantings worth it, so I
no longer bother to buy flats of annuals. My plan for the big flower
bed is marigolds for covering the dirt and castor bean plants for
shade and visual impact. Both will be from seed so I need to wait
another week or two before planting. They are the only two showy
plants I've had very good luck with when planting seeds. I might add
a few sunflowers too though. Someday I want to have so many
perennials that I don't have to plant anything on a yearly basis, and
then I can plant the annuals I love, when I want to.
