Re: delurking: what I've gotten from rctq (LONG)

Hi Lynnette,

you're welcome to use strawberries :-) They are very healthy and one of the
few fruits I am not allergic too. Maybe that's the reason I did so many of
them?

Most days I just skimm over the messages myself, otherwise I'd spend too
much time on the computer. Joining the BOM is a good idea, especially with
something you do not feel comfortable doing. It's just a block per month but
you'll really see improvement as I did with my applique. In the end I even
did some hug blocks applique last year, and will definitely continue doing
if I feel it fits.

Uschi
(chocolate covered strawberries are great also...)

Hi,
I have been lurking for a while. I work full time plus being busy with
'other' stuff, so I really do not have time to read this newsgroup. WAAYYY
too much traffic.... However, I've been doing it anyway. :-) May not be
able to do it much longer. Today I finally marked everything 'caught up'
although I wasn't anywhere close to it!

I just wanted to say 'hi' and to let you all know some of what I've gotten
out of rctq lately:

- I wanna do postcards! I looked at lots of the links and I liked so many
of them! I am really inspired! I hope nobody minds too much if I
steal some ideas like ginkgo leaves or flamingos or patchwork base
or strawberries.... Of course, I would just use it as a starting
point so my finished ones would be very different. Especially the
first ones as a beginner!

I like the size and think it would be manageable size project that
maybe I could even finish. I could also use it as a way to experiment
with techniques like free-motion stitching. Maybe a way to use up
class samples?

And a place to do just a LITTLE beading or hand applique. I'm not
much on hand work, I avoid it as much as possible - but a little
bit now and again wouldn't hurt!

Or just a LITTLE stamping or fabric painting or....

- BOM sounds so much fun! I will check in on it in April (coming up
really soon now! April starts only a few days away). But I'm
not sure I'll have the time. Then there's trying to
decide which one to do.... I've never tried paper piecing. I've
not done too much hand applique either for that matter. So both
would be good practice.

Or maybe I should take a BOM at a local quilting store instead and
have the in-person social aspect to it. I'm still considering.

- I'm afraid to drop the feed dogs too. Well not really afraid but just
haven't
done it enough to get good results. That's why I think maybe
practicing on small postcards might get me going.

Since I don't like handwork much, I think I really need to learn
free motion machine quilting or those tops will never get quilted!

I have a 'kites' top that I want to do some sort of Celtic Knot
design with the quilting. I'm kind of afraid to ruin it with
amateur machine piecing but it's a lot of hand quilting! Although
it's fairly small - wall hanging or lap quilt size about 50" square,
that is bigger than anything I've quilted before. I've just done
small wallhangings.

- sewing and tools and organizing tips have been interesting. I can't
think
of any right now but I know they will pop into my head when
I need them.

- Currently, I am more into wearables so I'm working on a couple of
jackets
for the wearable arts fashion show in May. One is a collage jacket
with a wild lizard print fabric. The other is a kimono-like pieced
jacket of Japanese prints with butterflies, dragonflies, etc.

I've also just completed a long-sleeved t-shirt for a sewing class.
Next project for the class is a pair of elastic waistband pants....
The class is actually too simple for me but I'd never sewed with
knits. It's also a prerequisite for some more advanced classes.
It's also good for me because I need a deadline to finish things...

This news group is also inspiring me to finish some of my quilt
UFOs:

Besides the kites quilt, I have a Trip Around the World
top I must quilt someday.
Also a bunch of sampler blocks that was my first 'started'
quilt but not my first 'finished'.

- The group just sounds so supportive and it just makes me smile to read
about
the HUGS and other giving projects you all do. I must admit, because
there is so much traffic I skip lots of the OT posts so don't always
hear about your lives - although other times I get interested and
follow the thread even after it drifts OT.

A little more about me:
QIs: just one outdoor-only cat Freddie.
chocolate: only milk! and actually usually prefer 'cheaper' to
more expensive types. Addicted to M&Ms!
live in San Jose California and work as a tech writer.
family: 'almost married' SO of 10 years - no kids.

addicted to classes! I may not have very many finished quilts
but I've taken classes on almost everything out there.
EXCEPT free motion quilting.... haven't been able to
find one that works with my schedule.

Every year I go to Pacific International Quilt Festival
and try to take a few classes. Last year, I took 4!
Mostly with wearable slant, but many techniques work
on either quilts or garments.

OK, I've gotten a bit carried away here. But just wanted to say THANKS
for all the inspiration and cheer and advice I've gotten from this group.
I hope to be able to continue to pop in here but it's so hard to keep up.

- Lynnette
