Okay, Kathy, you just frightened me half to death! <g> I've *never*
done a back-up and have no idea how to do it. Any tips or
instructions? I have Windows XP (home edition) and Outlook Express....
does that make a difference? :-/

AFAIK, Outlook Express doesn't make any difference to backing up, and most
of the popular backup programs should run just fine on XP home edition.

I personally use Retrospect Express because I can use it on both Mac and
Windoze and it lets me do the automated backup. I'm sure there are other
good programs out there, too. Of course, you can always just "drag and drop"
your files onto an extra hard drive, but then you have to remember to do it
regularly. If you can, my hat is off to you! *grin*

So, first you need to get your backup program and something to back up onto.
Personally, I think the easiest thing to backup onto is another (external)
hard drive. Plug the hard drive into your computer (you may have to load
drivers from a CD that comes with the hard drive, or Windoze may already
recognize it), load your backup software, and set it for automated backup.
In Retrospect Express, you use "EasyScript" backup, answer the questions it
asks, and it sets everything up for you. FWIW, I set all my backups for the
middle of the night because I leave my computers on and just turn the
screens off.

This will *not* protect you if something happens to your whole house, but it
will protect you if something happens to your computer. If you have data
that you really, really can't lose if, say, your house got hit by a tornado,
(for example, my business accounting data), it's best to have an extra copy
of that somewhere else. Once a month I copy that stuff onto a CD and keep
the critical work stuff at home and the critical home stuff at work. Plus I
have a copy of the super duper critical stuff on a USB key in my purse. Call
me paranoid, but when the big one hits and everything east of Reno falls
into the Atlantic, the last thing I want to do is dig in the rubble for hard
copies to re-enter all my accounting stuff. *grin*

HTH!
