I'm here...
Back in MI for now -- but will likely head back to Dear Sis's tomorrow --
and then back to MI on Sunday... not looking forward to the drive ... but
DMom needs a respite.
Mother-in-law is doing okay -- she's worried about finances and thinks she
should sell her home. DH and I say "sit tight for 3-5 months and let's see
where you are at. We are fortunate in that if she needs a little help, we
can give it. She needs to just give it some time. We need to determine
whether or not living alone is even an option -- no sense moving to a
different home immediately (wouldn't be much smaller -- she thinks it would
be less expensive -- and we're not convinced of that) and then discovering
she can't stay alone. With her Parkinson's -- the meds and the debilitative
nature -- we just want to find out what "normal" will look like before she
makes any drastic changes. Oh well. Fortunately, her brother will be
flying in from Oregon tomorrow night and staying for the next week or so
with her. She is also bipolar -- so we have to watch her carefully that she
doesn't swing one way or another. When her father died (she was in her
30's) she had a severe breakdown and was hospitalized for months. She and
her DH were together since she was 13 (more than 55 years) so once the
initial shock passes -- we don't know what to expect. DH is doing okay --
worried that she won't just sit back for a while and adjust and grieve...
before making any major changes.
Dear Sis is in a day-by-day mode. Her body is getting weaker by the day.
She can't even stand now -- she just collapses due to lack of muscle
strength. She wants to eat but can't -- nothing will stay in/down. So
after 4 months of this -- her energy is nil. Her muscles are just fading
away to feed her body. Her meds are keeping her pain well in control --
which is a huge relief after weeks of horrible pain. Hospice nurses
indicate we are in the last days/ weeks -- hard to tell for sure. But
definitely not long at all. One of the nurses didn't think she would see
the new year. But most agree that she will not likely see Feb 1st. Then
again.. they say you never know. She is at home, with a cath to eliminate
the need to move. But we cannot move her (you know... the dead-weight
thing -- she is helpless to help us). She basically is living in her
recliner in the living room. I fear bed-soars are not far away ... Can't
imagine being in one basic position 24/7 for weeks on end. But if that
happens, then maybe they can move her back to the hospital in the palliative
care wing. In the mean time, we stay with her, administer meds to keep her
comfortable and pray for her.
Everyone here -- your prayers I know helped her celebrate one more Christmas
with her sons. My next prayer is that she continues to be pain free and
when the time comes passes peacefully. She is accepting of her fait, Dear
Mother knows that there is nothing she/we can do -- and is with her nearly
24/7. I will try to be there as often as I can in these last days.
I'll keep in touch.... at Dear Sis's (and at home) I have Internet access
(although at Dear Sis's I use google so you will see me as Playnkate - (the
puzzler and gamer) and here I'll just remain...
Thanks again for prayers and good thoughts...
