One post card or letter in a TV station's mailbox says much more to
the programmers than one thousand signatures on an online petition or
one hundred e-mails. The reason is simple. It takes one second to
delete thousands of e-mails. Online petitions are ignored by big
business because so many petitions have false names planted by a
single person. But it is just plain impossible to ignore an avalanche
of paper blocking up a business post office box for weeks and weeks
sent by people who cared enough about the programming to take the time
to write a note, purchase a stamp, and get the note into the mail
system.
Grass roots mail avalanches have already been proven to work many
times. The key is to spread the word quickly and get enough people to
actually do it, and do it with good grace. The letters and cards must
be received in large numbers daily and continue for a month or more,
or until an announcement of new quilting shows. Dirty words and
threats of violence must be avoided when writing the letters. Merely
expressing that you are displeased with the new programming and you
will no longer watch their channel because it no longer offers
programs you care to see is much better.
If the show you want is gone and there is no other show you like on
that channel, call your cable company and request that the channel be
taken out of the cable company's line up during future line-up changes
and tell them why. When cable companies get many of this kind of
request for the same channel they pass it along to the TV channel big
wigs. This hits the TV channel in it's pocket book as they have a
harder time selling ad time when the numbers of the viewing audience
suddenly takes a nose dive. To avoid a dwindling audience they will
often change the programming. It may not give you back the old show,
but you could end up with an even better one.
