When Pepper Cory spoke at our guild last month, she talked about Southern
quiltmakers who used to use "tobacco cloth" on the backs of their quilts,
and they "loved it because of the way it shrunk up". I am unfamiliar with
tobacco cloth, but it sounded like a kind of loose-woven fabric. Perhaps you
could do some research into this. Or, use it for an "arty" quilt and
fold/twist/scrunch it up and stitch it down!
