Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, especially since every cat and
every situation are different, but cats WILL go where they eat. I know
because I have a cat that goes near the food bowl and practically on top of
the water bowl.
One of our cats is having the "peeing outside the box" problem too. We were
using a plastic bowl for their water and a wooden container to sit it on to
hold the spills. One of the cats started peeing on it, not in the bowl but
as close as he could get without it going into the bowl. The bowl and mat
started soaking up the urine smell so DH build another mat thingy with a
metal bottom hoping that it would deter him from peeing at the water bowl.
We also replaced the plastic bowl with a glass bowl. It worked for a couple
of weeks but he is now back to peeing at the water bowl. He has also peed on
our bed and if we leave anything paper or plastic lying around he'll pee on
that during the night.
I think it is purely a behavior problem with him and not a urinary or
medical problem because he's very sneaky. He will sit at the water bowl and
drink then look around and watch us to see if we're watching him. If he sees
us looking at him he walks off when he's done drinking. But if we aren't
looking he'll pee at the bowl before we can catch him. He is very
territorial and wants to keep the other cats away, his brother in
particular. After reading previous posts in this thread and seeing someone
mention Feliway, we ordered a bunch of stuff. Some of it came in today so
we'll see how it works .
