OK, but as I read the original question, what I think Brian is getting at (the bottom line) is, if I use a stack and whack method that someone else developed, following his/her directions, is it legal to sell the resultant quilt, or is that copyright infringement?I can't see how it possibly could be, but I'm not an intellectual property attorney. If it is advertised as a "Stack'n'Whack" quilt, using that specific term, there might be a case for trademark infringement. If the quilt you are selling is an exact copy of one in the book -- same fabrics, same colors, same placement of parts of the design -- there MIGHT be cause for complaint; otherwise, I don't see where there would be a problem. There are enough other pattern writers writing similar patterns that I don't think it would be possible to prove without a doubt whose instructions you followed, or that you used someone else's instructions.
