Karen, I hope you meet some good people this holiday season--don't give up,
they're out there!
The universe has an amazing way of meeting our expectations over and
over and over again.
Perhaps. But the universe also seems to have an amazing way of disabusing me of my youthful notion that people are inherently good by frequently putting people in my path who are only out for themselves and see me as a sucker to be fleeced.
Fleeced for what? How can someone fleece you unless you allow it?
OK, for one example, rent is due on the first of the month and if it's not paid, there's a sizeable penalty. Roommate promises that if I pay the rent on the first, she'll pay me back on Friday/payday. Since they won't take partial payment, and I don't want to pay the 20% late fee, I pay the full rent on the first. Every time I bring it up the rest of the month, she says she doesn't have any money. Fine, I evict her when I realize that she's never going to pay, but I'm still out her half of the rent. And, invariably, whenever I evicted a roommate, she'd run up a $400 long distance bill that wouldn't arrive until she was out, at which point I had no leverage to make her pay it, and in one case, no way to contact her because she simply disappeared, no forwarding address.
For another example, after I got sick, I invited a couple to live here, free room and board in exchange for chores. Everyone was in agreement before they moved in that they were to take care of EVERYTHING (cooking, cleaning, laundry) and I would focus only on getting better. I was assured that the first thing that would be done was a thorough "allergy clean" of my bedroom to help me get well. The first week, every time I suggested some chore needed doing, they were too tired from being up for 3 days straight packing/moving. The second week, they were too depressed. The only person who cooked while they were here was me. The place never got vacuumed -- they said my new vacuum was broken and it was apparently too logical for them to use their own. She "didn't know how" to load a dishwasher and didn't appear particularly interested in learning how. I'll grant them, they did their own laundry, but I still had to do my own, which they had agreed to do for me. I was actually working HARDER with these people here to "take care of me", because I was cooking and doing dishes for three instead of one.
Do you honestly think several inches of water in your entire house is
simply a matter of using bleach to clean it up? If a few inches came
into this house it would ruin heirloom Persian rugs, heirloom Ethan
Allen furniture, leather couches and club chairs with wooden donut
feet, and hundreds of books, some of which are irreplaceable. Then
there is the tile through the house, the linoleum (not vinyl) and a
wide array of electonic equipment.
That's your house. These people didn't have heirloom stuff or a lot of electronics. When there's a flood warning, they put the couch and bed up on blocks so it won't get wet, ran a few items up to the attic. Everything else could be wiped down with bleach.
How many people do you know personally who bought trucks and luxury
items with their flood insurance checks they paid to get?
"Personally" as in friends of mine, none. Professionally, I dealt with a number of them, and they testified to "everyone in the neighborhood does it", with names and examples.
