Of course you can't delete posts, but you can mark them
read, which effectively gets the job done. You can filter
on "From:", so you can effectively block particular individuals, and
the subject line filters allow you to block individual posts. The
filters are not limited to entire threads, unless marking the
entire thread as read is the action you choose.

I just knew I'd miss something; thanks for filling in the gaps in what I posted.
Just as a matter of interest, Outlook Express allows deletion of newsgroup posts other than one's own; I used it before Thunderbird and found that feature to be quite handy.
