I find this very interesting. A few weeks ago, I did exactly the
same as I have just done with a picture of a ladybug taken from BBC World
News web site. No one mentioned any copyright infringement, but because
it was Robert Bateman all hell broke loose this time. Further, I live in
Canada, and I dont give a tinker's dam what US law says; it does not
apply to me. Quote me from Canadian law. Finally, I have a hide like a
rhinoceros, and no amount of insults etc. make any difference to me. If I
find some nice pictures in the future, I will do exactly as I did this
time. If you and anyone else wants to make a "federal" case out of it, go
ahead. A fat lot of good it will do. Generally speaking, if there is a
post on this sort of newsgroup that you dont like, the best thing is to
ignore it.
Jim - quite honestly - Canadian laws are very similar in this regard to American ones. (I deal with copyright in my job). The work is copyright to Bateman, and there are some artists who are very, very careful and particular about how their images are used/interpreted. It is not just the big companies who protect their copyrights.
The fact that you won't acknowledge the copyright violation, and are reacting so strongly makes me think that you do indeed understand that the comments about copyright are correct. While an artist is unlikely to go to the trouble of suing an individual who has copied a work for his/her own use, it still is a copyright violation whether you like it or not.
I've always thought J.E.H. MacDonald's Tangled Garden http://dropd.com/issue/21/GroupOfSeven/tangled-big.jpg
would make a wonderful stitched piece, however,if I ever used it as a pattern, I certainly wouldn't be offering to do so for anyone else.
