Since I only live about 3 miles from Hardwick Hall, maybe I should go and have a look at it. Pity they charge a lot to go in.

My wife has a copy of the National Trust's Hardwick Hall handbook (1994 edition). The lower illustration on page 26 is titled "strapwork and interlacing patterns on plain velvet, with birds painted onto velvet roundels"; the upper illustration on page 27 is titled "red velvet cusion decorated with strapwork made up of strips of cloth of silver, flowers and leaves". According to my wife it looks just like applique.
We paid a flying visit to Hardwick in 1995 when we were living in Gloucestershire but only visited the Old Hall which was in the care of English Heritage (of which we were members); the New Hall was in the care of the National Trust and we baulked at paying the extortionate entry fee.
