the vision thing...
i've never approached a problem that way. i've never read about caesar
for instance, taken note of his traits (e.g. ruthlessness, cunning,
ambition, vision, manipulation, calculation) then conclude i must
internalize those characteristics to be successful.
most of the time, it starts with a vague notion or idea or solution to
a problem that irritates me. then i try to narrow down the options,
while taking note of constraints such as time, money, quality,
personalities, politics, or the basic raw materials. i try very hard
in assessing these pieces of the jigsaw puzzle as _accurately_ and
_objectively_ as possible, because any errors this early can lead to
gross and costly mistakes later on. the raw materials are almost
infinite, in all shapes and sizes, coming at you from all directions,
all the time. then, if you're lucky, a sequence or part of the puzzle
falls into place in your mind. the vaguest of notions suddenly
transforms from fluid water into hard ice.
you've already gone through the trade-offs, the counter-arguments, the
drawbacks and determined the best way to proceed. so when someone
complains about a danger you've already factored months ago a dozen
times over, you get irritated they didn't do their homework, and
depending on the situtation, try to neutralize or bypass them because
there's no time to explain everything to everyone, nor do their
homework for them. at this point, when the desired result is in the
mind, perhaps one takes on the attributes of certain kinds of people,
but that's a byproduct. it's not the primary goal.
there's little sense of freedom. there is, however, a never ending
sense of constraint. for instance, i can't take a block of granite,
proclaim it to be wood, then use wooden tools and expect a quality
piece of sculpture, given x amount of time and y amount of money.
there is plenty of wiggle room in the fine details here and there, but
little elsewhere. i think the weaker leaders fail to accurately assess
the constraints and feel they can do anything because they don't
understand all of the major tradeoffs and permutations. if you care
about results -- and results are the best way to gain and maintain
power/influence -- and you hate self-serving bull*** to cover up your
poor results, then i think it's next to impossible not to feel
_perpetually_ constrained, regardless of what some 3rd person
piddlywink may say about one's power or influence.
