You Guys are NOT going to believe this but I actually talked with Olwyn Mary this morning! SHE IS FINE -- NO FLOODING!!! They still have a phone land line so I had absolutely no trouble getting through because I was using MY phone land line. You could have knocked me over with the proverbial feather when she answered the phone!!
OK -- here's what she had to say. They live in the Lower Garden District not too far off of Magazine Street -- I KNEW it was something that started with an M and dealt with firearms. The area they are in was one of the first ones settled in the area ages ago. It is on a little ridge and is therefore considerably higher than the surrounding areas. Add to this the fact that their house is built up off the ground and you will understand why they had no flooding. Thanks Heaven for THAT! She has no power -- had none since about 3:00AM Monday -- but the stuff that is frozen is staying frozen so she has food and water as needed. She did say that, if the power is going to be out for any length of time, they will be on the first plane out of there to wherever :-).
She said there is a foot or so of water in all the streets and the Hilton where DH and I stayed is pretty much trashed -- at least the parts that she caught a glimpse of on the local news. She has a battery radio and a small battery telly so she is able to get all the news, etc. She said that Metairie (sp??) is heavily damaged but still standing but what she's seen of Slidel is just totally gone -- gone as in wiped off the face of the earth! Word from the local news is that this is where the eye of the storm came ashore and it has suffered what *looked* to be total devastation. She is conserving her battery operated telly so doesn't get to watch for very long so we could be all wrong but what she did see looked absolutely awful.
So, at her request, I will be posting this info to the other groups that she posts to. If anyone wants, you can e-mail me and I will pass all the info on to her. If you want to phone her, e-mail me and I will let her know and make sure it is OK to give out her phone number. Fortunately, she has been able to contact her family so they know she & her DH are safe and sound. A bit soggy and worse for the wear but OK. CiaoMeow >^;;^<
