Just a FWIW, but on the 1976 Lincoln Town Car a coffee can (or a can of
like or similar nature) _was_ used as a vacuum reservoir. Every time I
opened the hood I cracked up.

Ah! is *that* what that was?

I saw one of those once and figured someone had
bodged around a problem. OEM?
Well, if it worked, it worked.
