It is a "level", so it only senses the center of the earth. So, when aligning two objects separated by many feet, you have to add in the calculation manually, or dial a calculated offset into the zeroing dial. When millwrights align a large turbo-alternator set, they have to do stuff like this. The Talyvel instruction book has a table for this.
