Google Groups has no filters but otherwise it works fine on a slow
dialup connection. You could use it for a backup until you find
another paid news reader with filters.

Actually the spam and agitprop is so childishly obvious that it
doesn't seriously interfere with finding on-topic postings except when
the spammers completely flood the group. I have a large monitor at
high resolution and can usually see all unread posts on a single page.
It's like scanning a newspaper.
