The basic error seems to have been the assumption that he [Nixon]
was an aberration or outlier, rather than the first in a long
series. Of course we have had crooks/incompetents as president
long before Nixon, but they just stole the nation's gold, and
caused a depressior/panic or two, rather than stealing the
country from under our feet.
