Honesty time. Have you ever worked on a hot circuit?

Certainly, even in the same situation - but that box gets stuffed so
full of dry cardboard (back, sides, around the rim, etc.) there's No
Way that you're going to touch anything hot with that Neutral when you
loosen the lug, even if it jumps.

Yup. That wire you pry out of the hole has a way of going places until you
muscles get it back under control. Hitting one of the other lugs would
suck.

And I still have insulated tools, wear Class 00 (500V rated) gloves
and cover gauntlets, and long sleeves and a faceshield.

I've done enough arc fault sessions to understand and take this seriously.

And finally, if it looks like it's beyond my capabilities I'll
gladly call the utility and let them handle it. I may be dumb
sometimes, but I'm certainly not stupid.

If it had been one of the power lugs, no way but this looked doable. I
likely wouldn't do it again. What seemed reasonable at 40 starts to look a
bit less reasonable at 50.

How many DIY class homeowners do you know that could handle a
situation like that safely? Or have the proper safety gear on hand,
or know how to improvise and insulate their tools when they don't have
$800 to drop on an insulated socket set? Not too many.

Not many. I was able to bring home protective gear from work.

This is the reason you throw out the "Kids, don't try this at home!"
disclaimer when you post something potentially dangerous. Especially
when you know that people will try to duplicate the feat without the
same level of care, the "Here, hold my beer and Watch This!" crowd.

Agree. One can get in to a dangeous level of comfort managing risks to the
point that one is taking too many risks. FWIW, I've gotten to be much more
risk adverse over the years when the payback really isn't worthwhile.
