Being 100% disabled and often bedridden, I have missed a LOT of
newscasts, sometimes a whole month at a time.


I see some very fit cops and the occasional disgrace to the badge, but
one thing I have noticed: look on the other end of a questionably (to
just plain inexcusably) used taser, and there is typically a blubber
ball with a badge. How many people have been killed by those
"no-lethal" weapons? How much more likely is one to be subjected to
50kV if the cop in question would get winded telling us he/she couldn't
run 100 yards, let alone have a consistent time for it?

They should have to meet the same standards the military has. If you
are above a certain weight for your height you have 90 days to lose the
weight, or you are replaced. It applied to everyone, even 20 years ago.
One of the 'Announcers' I worked with was told to shape up, or he would
get a medical discharge.

That might be a bit too harsh for civil servants, but clearly we need to
move that way.


Why is ot too harsh? They don't put on 100 pounds in 90 days, do
they? The warnings start when you are above the proper weight, not
after you get to then limit. Also, would you want a bunch of 400+ pound
firefighters or on a rescue squad?


I see that you didn't get the 'humor' that the cops were being
'forced' to eat all those donuts. :(

I got it. I would say I did not find it funny, but that is not quite
true. My problem with the humor is that the truth in it (the free
doughnuts) skips the personal responsibility that seems to be completely
forgotten in dealing with obesity. Long story. If it sounds callous,
keep in mind that I have a couple of toes dangling in medicine (I spend
part of my time designing and building medical research equipment), and
sometimes see people who needed a good swift kick 100 lbs earlier,
before the life-limiting complications of obesity and inactivity appeared.

I meant what I said about a disproportionate number of the troublemakers
among cops being overweight to the point that they could never do what
we expect of them.


Any bad apple needs booted out of any job, but then some are
protected by their unions, to the point they face criminal charges.
