O.K. Let us know what you discover. But I know what "satin
finish" means for Starrett equipment, and since Mitutoyo is one of
Starrett's primary competitors, I would expect the same from both.
So you would regard "satin finish" as a good thing, and not something that means a cheap printed scale?
Yes!
I would suggest that it would be if you are pre-setting the
calipers to a given size to allow their use as quick go-nogo gages, but
probably not make much difference when actually measuring something
directly -- unless you need to adjust for just a certain amount of drag
on a surface which is easily distorted, such as perhaps Teflon.
The advantage I see mentioned on that Long Island Indicator site is that the caliper jaws can be lapped to remedy wear, and the vernier adjusted to match.
I think that is separate. What I thought that you were talking
about is a separate traveler on the beam which can be individually
clamped to the beam, and then a knurled nut on a very fine screw can be
used to move the movable jaw *with* the vernier relative to the beam and
fixed jaw.
Thanks. Now I look at the picture, I can see that you're quite right. I assume that you slacken the tiny screws at the end of the bar to adjust the vernier, but I'm not certain. It would be good to have one that could be repaired if necessary.
Best wishes,
Chris
