I've never watched anyone else weld, but I'm sure I'd have
learnt a lot faster if I'd had some directed advice rather than learning
from an ancient book and experimentation. And if you do decide to take it
further, come back here an ask the friendly folks their advice about
equipment before you buy anything. Chris
Dang right. If you can find a good teacher that will explain as he goes and
let you watch, you will learn pretty quickly. After that, talent takes
over, and you have to learn the hand moves and get the hang of it. But a
teacher that will show you and let you watch will cut lots and lots of time
off your learning curve.
I struggled in a welding class with 1" plate, V groove, open root, vertical
travel up. 6010 root, 7018 thereafter. The teacher showed me what I was
doing wrong, and showed me the right way, and, boy, that saved a lot of
time. It would have taken me a lot longer by trial and error.
