Re: Variable Capacitors used in a phase converter

According to Mark Main <email@xxxxxxxxxxxx>:
I'm being misunderstood... or said differently, I must be
miscommunicating, and so I'll try again.

I wasn't assuming that this is the primary capacitance and so that's
why I spoke of a phase converter that was already tuned. I was
wondering if these larger variable capacitors had enough capacity to be
added in parallel with the other capacitors to add extra capacity
needed during a load and then back off when idle.

Just to add a single microfarad to what you already have, you
would need 500,000 of them at the full 2000 pF end of their range.

I'm guessing that the answer is still now given the resounding no
answers.

Yep.

Can someone help me with the math used to determine what the uF, Amps,
Volts rating is for this (and other simlar high frequency items)?

To convert pF to uF, divide by 1,000,000 (or multiply by 10e-6).

High frequency or low does not matter, except that you are
unlikely to see much effect from a change in the pF range at low
frequencies, and especially down at 60Hz or the UK 50Hz frequencies of
power distribution lines.

The volts rating is simply how many volts can be applied before
it is likely to experience a failure.

And you are not likely to get that 50A through it at 60Hz unless
you *do* exceed the voltage rating and thus precipitate a breakdown.

Look up the formulas for calculating capacitive reactance, and
you can get an approximation of the current at a given voltage and
frequency from a given capacitance. In reality, you need to adjust for
power factor once you get into values which will do something, but this
will give you a rough idea why it won't work.

Good Luck,
DoN.
