Hmmmm. I measured the ones in Home Depot today and the 10" ones were 5" from
upright shaft to quill, 12" ones were 6" from shaft to quill.
Kind of a misnomer, but so is the term "2x4" .

Its the working distance from directly below the quill to the upright
that holds the head up. It means you can put a piece of material at
least 10" on the table and drill at the far side or a 20" something
and drill in the center.
12 and 24 for a 12" drill.
think of it as the "swing" as on a lathe.
