This is just a guess, but have you tried checking the entire disk for file
errors? I don't know what it's called in Win 2K but in Win XP one way to
get there is right click on a drive letter from Explorer, click on
Properties, click on the "Tools" tab and then select "Error-Checking". It
could be that one or more of your system files is corrupted.
I'm running NIS as well and recently had problems following a LiveUpdate
session. Something in the firewall settings got munged and a couple of
programs wouldn't work unless the firewall was disabled. Email me if you
think this might be the problem and I'll see if I can remember how that got
resolved. A quick check would be to ensure that you are off line, disable
the firewall and then try Word again or your other variations on Maintenance
Mode, re-install, etc.
Another option would be to start in Safe Mode and try the
uninstall/re-install from there.
Finally, does Win2K have the System Restore featur that is built into Win
XP? With that, you can restore the system to a previously known good
condition, under some circumstances.
