Interesting tangent: In the U.S., beekeepers ask for considerably
higher prices from consumers than do distributors and retail stores

I've noticed that too. It's funny how, when you take out the middleman
and eliminate some of the transportation and storage costs, the price
goes *up*.

Well small scale producers have to pay heavly to market and distribute
products like that.

All true, but selling 5-gallons at $30 to $37.50 a gallon is
outrageous when the going price from om a distributor is less
than $20/gallon delivered.

I person could handle the marketing and distribution of 1000 gallons of
honey a year full time, or they could handle the marketing and
distribution of 1000000 gallons a year full time.

It is like walmart has gotten into every facet of American life. On
that note, I found raw clover honey from AK at Sam's club for $8.70/5
lbs. for being raw, it is unremarkable.

"I have been told" that Costco sell 5 lbs of filtered Clover
for $6.99, but I have never seen or tasted the honey.

The one time I made the 150 mile round trip to DutchGold they
had an in-store special on 5 lbs of Buckwheat, Alfalfa, and
Clover for $8.99. But that was three years ago.
