Well the jars *said* 20oz by weight but I suspect it was 20oz by volume.
SWMBO gets mad at me when I do it, but every time I run into these damned English
unit confusions I curse the stone-age measuring system we are still stuck with using.
Of course it won't be any better with the metric system. People still talk about something
"weighing" so-and-so may grams. Grams are units of mass, not weight. There is an
important difference, even though it is about universally misused.
The difference between weight and mass is unimportant when brewing beer. The difference between weight and volume is critical. If we were using the metric system and saw .5 kg then we would know that the 20 oz was by weight. If we saw .6 Liter, we would know it was by volume. But in the English system, we use ounce for both weight and volume and this can cause rather serious errors.
