The flow rate of the wort through the grain bed is not going to reach the
maximum flow rate for the inside diameter of the drain tube anyway. So
increasing the surface area isn't going to help. All you need is a long
enough braid to match the flow rate of the grain bed (which doesn't take much),
after that it won't make any difference.
And keep in mind that all the draining happens at the end of the braid
at the ooutflow. To prove it to yourself, you can fill you cooler with
water, and start running it out as you lift up the end of the braid
farthest from the outflow. The flow rate doesn't change as less and
less of the braid is underwater.
