I doubt this post will sway the OP, who obviously has made up his mind
to hate StrangeBrew, but I, for one, am a huge fan of the software and
its author Drew Avis. I have been using the program for years, and
don't have any complaints. I'm also someone who upgrades my PC
frequently with new OS loads. This always requires me to enter a new
registration key. Drew is always very fast and cheerful in his
responses to my requests for new keys. I imagine that if the OP had
emailed Drew with detailed descriptions of the error messages he
received while trying to install the software, Drew likely would have
responded with some helpful advice.
I do software implementation testing for a living for a large
corporate computing environment. It is difficult enough to test
software installations that are going out to the workstations in the
enterprise, where there configuration state is fairly well known. I
imagine trying to develop test cases to test your installation on
every computer configuration that could be encourtered in the wild is
nearly impossible. Just think about the number of permutations of
Microsoft Windows OS and Service Pack / hotfix levels it's likely to
encounter. Then you get into different versions of stuff like the
Microsoft Distributated Data Access Components and other shared
components that come with different versions of Office software or
Internet Explorer--the possibilities are endless.
With all that said, it does seem like Drew has sort of given up the SB
project. There hasn't been a new release in quite a while. However,
the version out there does work with Vista! The only thing that
doesn't work is the help file unless you download the old winhelp32
module from Microsoft.

Something actually works with Vista? (ducks rapidly)
I agree that the support is outstanding. I did recommend an
improvement (being able to set a volume of wort lost to lauter tun
design), and was hoping to see it in a new version before too long. I
hope Drew is still working on it.
