IBUs?

What are IBUs? How can you quantify such a subjective quality as
bitterness? And, do you mean a medicinal, denatorium-like bitterness,
or a spicy bitterness. Like, what kind of bitter is Hair of the Dog's
Adam beer? Thanks!!!
